The Huge Difference Paint Will Make

I kept telling myself not to. I had enough half-finished projects, house work to do, and things to catch up on and certainly didn’t need to take this on. But the paint was on sale so I had to buy it and when I brought it home, I could just let it sit there until I had more time. What if I never have more time? When I woke up that morning I had no idea I would be diving into the job of painting our kitchen, but, hey, that’s just how I roll.

I’d had the thought of painting it a few months ago. At first I liked the brightness of the yellow that covered the walls, and maybe it was winter dragging me down, but suddenly I couldn’t stand it. It was so bright that it almost made the room feel dark, if that makes any sense. I love change (I switch the furniture around often), and once I decide somethings got to change, there’s no turning back my mind. My constant dis-contentment is probably a flaw, but I think of it as the advantage that drives me to get things done.

Not to bad, right? Now, when it came to the built-in shelving, I knew I couldn’t let it just blend in as it had before. When I finished putting all the grey up on the walls I guess I felt a little sorry for the poor color yellow. I really do like it and often find myself picking out yellow things when I’m shopping, so I painted the back of the built-ins a pale version of the color by mixing some leftover of the original shade with white.

The decorations that are in those shelves are not permanent. I’m hoping to do some thrift store shopping to fill them with vintage things.

The silver tea set, however, will remain. It was a treasure found at Mr. Charming’s great aunt’s house. How do you like that little chalkboard sign? It was a super simple project!

That crazy looking thing in the corner there is our oven. It’s super old, but has a ton of charm to it. The bonus is that it actually works really well. Guess the saying applies: “They don’t make ‘em like they used to!”

Man, what a difference from the yellow mess before.

This is my little herb garden. It’s so nice on these winter days to see a little green. I love using the mint as a garnish and I add parsley to just about every dish it seems.

I thought about writing this post as a tutorial on how to paint a kitchen, but I figured you are all probably great DIY’ers that have painted many rooms before. So, I hope you’ve found this post to be inspiring and full of ideas for your own lovely kitchens.
