Simple Distressed Frame Technique

The other day I stopped by my favorite thrift store here in town: Etcetera. It’s always exciting to roam through the aisle, sorting through the old and unwanted items, but I don’t think I need to tell you how much fun thrifting is 😉 One of my finds were these gold wall decorations for $1.25 each.

I had already had the big gold frame and kept meaning to do something with the color.

These new golden beauties were exactly what I needed to move forward with this little project. It is really easy. Here is my simple distressed frames technique:

Materials

  • Frames or decorations
  • Vaseline
  • Spray paint or normal paint
  • Paper towel

Start by spreading the vaseline in the places you want the under coat (in this case gold, but you can do whatever color you like) to show.

Then, spray paint or brush paint over the frames as you normally would. I decided to try both types of paint as an experiment. The spray paint went on much smoother and looked better in the end in my opinion. Allow it to dry a little and then dab a paper towel in the areas you spread the vaseline. In the picture above the frame is still drying while the other pieces have been dabbed.

I love how pretty they turned out. They remind me of the fast approaching spring season.

It was hard to find a wall small enough that they didn’t look dwarfed. I’m not sure if I’ll keep them here in our entryway.

As for the frame…remember how it went around the chalkboard:

Now it isn’t so glaring. I like it much better this way.

I have to be honest I was a little skeptical about how it would turn out, but it surpassed my expectations. I’ll definitely be remembering this technique for future projects.
