Block Bucket for Baby: Easy DIY Toy!

Baby Jordan is a busy one year old. He is into everything, as every little boy should be, and I’m often scratchy my head trying to come up with toys and games that will both entertain and help him grow. This little DIY has been hands down his favorite, and it was so easy!

He loves putting things into other things. Any little object has to immediately be fit into a larger one. Sometimes he is very persistent about it all. That gave me the idea for this block bucket. The best part is, it doubles as storage for the blocks when he isn’t using them.

What you’ll need:

1. A cleaned out butter container (never throw these away! There are so many uses for them!)
2. Scissors or exacto knife
3. Cool colored duct tape
4. Blocks

Step 1: Cut a square into the top

I decided to go with one simple shape to begin with, until he gets the concept a little better. Later I’ll branch out to other shapes like circles and triangles.

Step 2: Cover the lid with tape:

I made sure to cover the edges of the cut out square first as they were quite sharp. Then, work your way from the inside out, smoothing the tape as you go.

Step 3: Cover the bucket with tape

I thought it would be as simple as wrapping the tape around a few times, but due to the shape of the container, I had to work in sections to avoid wrinkles. That being said, I wasn’t too meticulous since he’s only one and I don’t think he’ll mind.

Step 4: Put the lid on and have fun!

This is a great toy because it makes it easy to engage with your child by showing him how to put them in, building towers for him to take the block off the top, and having fun dumping them out when the bucket’s full. Jordan and I played for a long time with this cheap toy.

A little story on those blocks: an Occupational Therapist gave them to me at our baby shower because many kids are now failing the “block test” when evaluated. She said parents aren’t giving their kids these simple toys anymore and has noted a decrease in motor skills such as the strength and control it takes to build a block tower. So, buy your kids building blocks!
