Taliban Attack on Pakistan Base Kills 20.
German Says Islamic Extremists Target Migrants.
Boko Haram Violence Has Displaced 1.4 Million Children.
These were the first headlines shown upon a quick Google News search. It would seem we live in dark times. Judging from these stories I, like anyone, feel a creeping sense of disparity and fear at the news of the world. I sincerely wish we could all just get along and be happy and not fight. But, it’s hard to imagine an end to any of this.
It was with this heavy heart that I contemplated what my next DIY project would be. Those always cheer me up and get my mind in a right place. A globe had been sitting in our basement for months: a garage sale find still waiting to be used.
It was during that time that I was struck by an inspiration and set about to make it happen. My plan was to paint the globe and here is how it was done:
What you will need:
- Chalk Paint* (homemade or Deco art)
- Paint brush*
- Fine paint brush*
- 5 Gallon Bucket
- Screwdriver
- Spray Paint*
Start by taking the globe off any sort of stand using a screwdriver. This makes spray painting a lot easier.
In an outdoor, or well ventilated area, give the stand a pretty layer of spray paint and let it dry. I did a few coats to fully cover the old gold color underneath.
To paint the actual globe, I struggled at first to keep it up off the ground while still covering the entire thing. The solution I came up with was to prop it up on a 5 gallon bucket by the supports (those half circle things that connect the top to the bottom. Not sure what to call ‘em).
Try not to saturate it too much, but brush on light layers of paint.
Once that is dry, take out a fine brush, and, if you are confident in your freehand write a message or meaningful words on it. If not, that’s fine, I’ve heard amazing things about the Silhouette products* that basically do all the work for you and create gorgeous things! I’m saving up for one as we speak 😉
Now, more than a map: a message has made this globe into a symbol of hope and a reminder of great things. The events and news of the day is grim and so hard to watch when it seems there is no end in sight. What can humanity do to overcome its issues and resolve these wars? Is there even a chance of a way out? Or, will one war resolve to give way to another as history has done for the past centuries.
What can we do? Nothing.
But, someday, a valiant and great King will come riding in to put an end to all of this. We live in a hurting world, but there is hope in the fact that Christ will come again and we who follow Him will be ushered into an eternal and glorious home where sadness does not exist.
You may choose to believe it or not, regardless, I have found joy in the promise that “This world is not our home?.
