Free and Easy Pinecone Garland

I wasn’t going to decorate for fall this year.

While I love the new seasons and get so much joy from making our home suitable for each, our budget (read about how we are making it on $25,00 a year here) didn’t leave room to go buy new stuff and we didn’t really have old fall décor to use. I’ll admit, I was feeling a little sorry for myself when I started seeing so many beautiful fall home tours, until I realized something: like 90% of fall décor can be found outside!

So, I headed to our backyard and collected all kinds of wonderfully beautiful objects to use as décor in our home. One of the best treasures was a whole bucket full of pinecones! I had just the plan for them: a free and easy pinecone garland!

(Ok, the whole time I’m writing and editing this post this song is playing in my head. I don’t even listen to country music!)

Anyway….

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Twine*
  • Pinecones
  • Pretty garnishes

The video below goes through the steps quickly, but you’ll get a good idea of how this is made by watching it.

Just an FYI: my cousins are super cool people that everyone wants to be friends with because they are soooo talented and hip. It just so happens that they have a band called Outhear. The music in the video is my favorite of their songs. So, if you like them, give them a follow on Facebook and tell them I sent ya!

Step 1: Bake the pinecones in the oven to kill any creepy crawlies. I did 300 degrees for half an hour.

Step 2: Tie an 8” bit of twine around every pinecone.

Step 3: Cut a longer piece of twine (as long as you want to fit the space you are hanging it in) to attach the pinecones to.

Step 4: Make bows with that grassy stuff that I can’t for the life of me remember what it’s called. Seriously, I’ll give a virtual high five to the first person to leave a comment below telling me what it is.

Step 5: Hang it up and admire your pretty work!

See how simple and cheap that was? To think, I wasn’t even going to decorate for fall! Keep checking back because this isn’t the only bit of natural fall decor in our home ;). You’ll get our full fall home tour soon and it actually turned out pretty considering our budget.

If you are like us: on a tight budget that doesn’t allow for seasonal decorating, don’t despair! There are so many lovely things to make and create using things found in your backyard (i.e. for free!). The best part about this pinecone garland is that it most definitely can be used for Christmas with perhaps a few pine sprigs added.

Did you like the video? I’m considering doing a bit of a switch from traditional pictures and written steps to doing more videos in the future, so if you like it please comment and let me know! Oh, and subscribe to my Youtube channel 😉

  • Have you gotten your pumpkins yet? I just love the white and green ones we found at a local farm stand. Today's theme is "Creative Pumpkin Decor", though, I'm not sure how creative mine is: I just stuck them in a tool crate with some baby's breath :) Oh well! #charmingfall

  • Sometimes the best decorations are the cheapest to find. Take this little vignette for instance: the candle stick was from the dollar tree, the candles were in a box at a garage sale that I picked up for $2.00 (for the entire box), and a little boxwood sprig from our backyard finishes the look. Uncomplicated, but pretty. I’m going to challenge you today to put together a similar vignette in an area of your home that has been mocking you with the blahs. Grab some inexpensive items from around your home and see what happens. You might be surprised how easy decorating can be! #charminghome #decoratingtips #frugaldecor #farmhousestyle
