Have you ever watched a movie that was a childhood favorite as an adult? Years have passed since you even gave it a thought, but in a single moment of nostalgia, you decide to turn it on. I found myself in that position just recently. In the chaos of trying to get the house clean, put supper on the table, keep up with this blog, and calm my very sleepy and very fussy child, I did something that I never normally do. I stopped running around to get a million things done at once, I stopped multitasking and being productive and sat down to snuggle with my baby and watch a movie. It had to be something that would interest him, after all, the goal was to lull him to sleep and out of no where the thought of Winnie the Pooh came to mind. It had been so long since I watched that film that I hardly remembered most of it! The interesting thing about watching a childhood movie as an adult is discovering certain bits of humor that didn’t make sense to you before.
Jordan soon dozed off and I found myself totally relaxed and enjoying a moment of quiet despite the incredibly long list of things to do that day. It’s in those moments of peace that everything comes into perspective and I remember why it is that I’m doing what I’m doing day in and day out. It was also during that beautiful time that I came up with a little project for my garden.
The garden would soon need little signs to mark where the plants were and I wasn’t just going to tape the packets to a stick and call it good. This was an opportunity to add some character and design to the garden, but before that day I had struggled to come up with anything. I give credit to ol’ Rabbit for my inspiration!
Speaking of Rabbit, it’s always completely confused me as to the gender of this beloved character! I mean it’s voice is sort of manly, but it does things that are so womanly like decorate, garden, and fuss about cleaning. Am I the only one that has found this confusion rather troubling all through childhood? You know what other character is confusing? Turk from Tarzan! I recently discovered that Turk is actually a girl and my whole world was turned upside down! I always thought because she was pals with Tarzan that she was a boy…..
Oh bother, there I go, running down rabbit trails! Anyway, I was fortunate to have rescued some weathered boards from my parents burn pile. There were two distinct sizes that were so short, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them. Just when I was about to burn them myself, my Winnie the Pooh revelation struck. These discarded bits of wood could be put together to resemble the whimsical signs in none other than our dear friend Rabbit’s garden!
If you would like to make some just like mine here is a material’s list:
- Short and long pieces of wood
- If not using scraps, buy a couple of 1×3’s and cut to the width of your desired sign
- Then buy some 1×2’s and cut longer to be the posts
- Power drill
- 1’1/4″ screws
- Small paint brush
- Paint
Time: 45 mins - 1 hour
Cost: Free - $10
Put the signs together by driving a screw through the back of the post into the back of the sign. I only put one screw per sign so that they can be tilted a bit and because I didn’t think they needed more.
Once you have them assembled it’s time to paint.
I drew the letters on the boards with pencil first to get the spacing and lettering right. I didn’t fret too much about getting it perfect.
The paint I chose was just a half empty can I picked up at a garage sale. I used a small paint brush and just painted the letters. Nothing too fancy here.
I think Rabbit would be proud of my little garden signs. He/She would commend me on being organized with my garden this year, because, well, it’s Rabbit and that’s just how he/she is.
***Update: After extensive research I have deduced that Rabbit is in fact a male character.
***Update #2: Would you believe, Rabbit himself saw my little signs on Pinterest and came by to check them out himself!!! He gave me some gardening pointers and even planted some carrots for me! I’m just giddy to have been visited by such a famous character!
